Cleveland Heights, OH  44118 Map

JELLY BELLYby Charles SmithDirected by IAN WOLFGANG HINZ. A powerful story of a convict returning from a brief prison stay to resume his position as the neighborhood kingpin. Mike is at a crossroads in his life and when Jelly Belly returns, decisions need to be made that will effect these characters for a long time. The Chicago Defender wrote “Employing gritty poetry of the streets, Smith introduces us to Jelly Belly, who attempts to regain the service of Kenny, a former drug runner who has gone straight. Kenny is torn between the hope of prosperity through hard work shared with his friend Mike, or the opportunistic life of a drug pusher Jelly Belly offers.” Jelly Belly don’t mess with nobody. “Its unblinking, almost matter-of-fact depiction of a world whose values have turned upside down is credible and at moments, even funny in a ghastly way.” – Stephen Holden, New York Times “Smith’s dramas are persuasive without being didactic, and without suggesting simple conclusions. They are eloquent and poignant, but with a punch.” – ForeWord Reviews This is the 5th collaboration between Smith and Ensemble including the plays Knock Me a Kiss, A Free Man of Color, The Gospel According to James, and Golden Leaf Rag Time Blues. During their two weeks together in the desert, the Little Prince tells the Aviator about his adventures through the galaxy, how he met the Lamplighter and the Businessman and the Geographer, and about his strained relationship with a very special flower on his own tiny planet. The Little Prince talks to everyone he meets: a garden of roses, the Snake and a Fox who wishes to be tamed. From each he gains a unique insight which he shares with the Aviator: "It is only with the heart that one can see rightly." "What is essential is invisible to the eye." At length, both the "little man" & the Aviator must go home, each with a new understanding of how to laugh, cry, & love again.Get your tickets: squareup.com/store/ensemble-theatre-of-cleveland/item/the-little-prince... Oct 27, 8:00pm - Nov 12, 3:30pm

Shahrazad Theatre Company
2843 Washington blvd
Cleveland Heights, OH  44118 Map

About The Caucasian Chalk Circle: With the help of a few wayward actors, two divided and destitute post-war villages in the middle of a heated debate over “their” land, share the story of Grusha, a peasant who is given an abandoned and noble child whom she chooses to raise as her own."The city was full of flame and sorrow.Terrible is the seduction to do good!Long she sat with the childTill evening came, till night cameTill dawn came. Too long she sat,Too long she sawThe quiet breathing, the little fistsTill morning, the seduction was completeAnd she rose, bent down, and with a sigh, took the childAnd carried it away.Like stolen goods, she picked him up.And like a thief she crept away". It is a long and dangerous journey into the northern mountains to find the child a home; all while her beloved fiance is at war. Meanwhile, the city is in flames -- a scoundrel and drunkard is appointed judge, and suddenly the child's mother decides she wants him back! Grusha is put on trial. In this "golden age,” law and justice will be tested; will it bend or will it break? “And you who have listened to the story of the chalk circle,Bear in mind the age-old wisdom:That all things should belong to those who would do well by them,Children to the motherly, so they may thrive,Cars to good drivers, so they may be well driven. And the valley to the waterers, that it may bear fruit”....
